The Ice House

This Ice house, unique in Burgundy, is in the form of two cones of equal volume, placed one on top of the other, with the lower cone buried. 11M3 could be stored in there. The upper part is thatched.Glaciere chateau

In winter, farmers used to saw up the ice on the pond which was then placed in the ice house, up to one meter above soil level. Hot water was then poured over the surface which melted a very small amount of ice and filled the spaces between the pieces of ice.

A compact 10 to 11 m3 block of ice was thus formed which took more than a year to melt. It was by digging into this block in Summer that drinks could be cooled and food preserved. The inhabitants of Issy came for the ice with dried pigs' bladders, primarily for medical use.
